Well…what can I say? After less than five months in business, Blooming Lovely Cake are up for an award! Well, not just one but two awards with Ladies First Professional Development network: for Best New Business and Successful Home Based Business categories.
Honestly, I was absolutely amazed and delighted to discover this news a few weeks ago; firstly the discovery of being nominated for an award but then to be shortlisted as a finalist in two categories – well, as a brand new business, that was just the icing on the cake for me – excuse the pun ( which is totally unintended!)
Here’s the thing: when you’re in business for yourself, there’s not really anyone to give you that pat on the back and that sense of ‘enoughness’, apart from yourself of course, and in reality, how often do we give ourselves the recognition we deserve? But in a heartbeat we call ourselves out for things we didn’t do (enough of) or didn’t do well.It can be, at times, quite a lonely and isolating world when it’s you and just you, day in, day out, calling the shots, being the baker, the creative director, the ideas person, the motivator (that can be the toughest!), the marketing executive, the book keeper, the stock taker and oh yes, most recently the web designer and developer. And on a day-to-day basis, there’s no one really to give you that sense of recognition that you’re doing a job well done.
Of course, there are my gorgeous customers whom I absolutely love to bits – yes I do, and I’m not just saying that to wax lyrical; without my lovely customers, I have no business, so much love to you! In fact, in the short space of time that I’ve been running Blooming Lovely Cake, I’ve managed to notch up thirty seven 5* Google reviews which I’m super proud of but which humbles me at the same time too – having humility keeps one grounded. It’s funny, quite often I think to myself that I’m in the service of of bringing joy and happiness to people (not in the business of cake making and cake art), and that just fills me with gratitude.
Talking of gratitude, it’s good to be grateful in life at every step of the way: for what you have, what you’ve achieved so far and how far you’ve come already. And I am happy exactly where I am. I believe it’s the only way to move forward in life; I don’t think it pays at all to be over-competitive, over-zealous or coveting too much because once you begin operating from those linear and somewhat constricting of spaces, you move away from the richness of your innate knowing, your inspiration and your intuition; decisions and motivation rooted in factors that are placed ‘outside’ of yourself can make you veer off course in directions you never wanted to go in the first place. Following your bliss and following your truest of desires and passions should never lead you astray.
So, yes, getting this far, especially as a brand new business, and being plucked out from numerous applicants to be whittled down to a finalist, in not one but two categories, just fills me with immense joy, amazement and gratitude. If I do happen to win, of course you’ll be the first to know, and I’ll be over the moon. But let me leave you with this: always be courageous enough to shoot for the moon; even if you miss you’ll be amongst the stars…
